Though the name might give you hope that the sickness passes as the day goes on, that’s not always the case. Morning sickness is just a fancy name for the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), around the sixth week. It tends to settle by the fourteenth week of pregnancy. It usually affects women in the morning but it can strike at any time of the day as well.


1. One of the most basic concerns of mothers is whether the nausea will affect the foetus. Morning sickness is actually proven to be a sign of a healthy placenta, it doesn’t harm the foetus. However, if you experience intense and frequent vomiting, it’s best to consult your doctor.

2. The symptoms of morning sickness would be feeling dizzy, being unable to digest food or liquid, darker and lesser urine, and sometimes throwing up blood.

3. Hyperemesis gravidarum is a very rare but severe form of morning sickness which is thought to affect about 1% of all pregnant women. In 90% of hyperemesis gravidarum cases symptoms go away by the fifth month of pregnancy.

4. It’s generally seen that women undergo weight loss during this time period. A small amount of weight loss if normal as you’re not able to digest enough food, but ensure that you see a doctor if you lose too much weight suddenly.


1. The nausea that women feel is usually because of the increased hormones in the body during pregnancy. It’s usually attributed to the levels of estrogen or progesterone. Progesterone relaxes the uterus muscles to prevent early childbirth but may also affect the stomach muscles leading to excessive gastric acids.

2. During pregnancy, women also experience increased sensitivity to odours which aggravates the nausea.

3. Some doctors also believe that morning sickness is a preventive measure that the women’s body takes to ensure that toxic food doesn’t reach the foetus.

4. The intensity of morning sickness tends to increase if you’re carrying twins or more than one foetus.

5. Women tend to experience morning sickness because of decreased glucose levels in the body as the foetus maybe draining most of the energy stored up.


1. The most important step after experiencing morning sickness is to consult your doctor. Post that, since the vomiting may lead to dehydration, it’s better to drink small amounts of water at regular intervals, rather than large amounts of water occasionally. Make sure to drink water before or after eating, never with the meal.

2. You’re going to crave food and it’s always better to fulfil the cravings rather than ignore it. Like liquids, eat less food frequently. Try and stick to cold food, as they have less odour. Avoid sweet or spicy food, go for dry dishes.

3. Some studies have shown that eating ginger in the form of candies help to reduce nausea symptoms. Same goes for eating watermelon. Start the day by eating salty crackers, salt has proved to be good for morning sickness.

4. It’s important to nap during the day. Avoid lying down after eating. Try getting as much exercise as possible.

5. Avoid going to places that make you feel claustrophobic or generally warm and enclosed places. Feeling hot adds to nausea.
