overcoming postpartum depression

Postpartum depression is something that can affect any woman, after giving birth. It has the potential to create a lot tension between you and your baby and affect bonding. It’s important to understand that postpartum depression is nothing to be ashamed or scared of. The sooner we understand that we are suffering from something, the sooner it is that we can find treatment. Here are some of the ways to cope with or overcome postpartum depression:

1. Sleep

As a new mom, finding time to sleep may sound magical and unattainable. However, you need to try to set some time aside for you to get some rest, even if it’s just short naps here and there. Lack of sleep has a depressive effect on mood which could prevent you from overcoming depression.

2. Support

Something that plagues a lot of our lives is our inability to ask for help. Whether it be out of ego or out of concern about being a bother to others, many of us refuse to ask for help. It’s time you step out of that bubble. Friends and family are here for you and more than willing to help. Especially at a time like this, when you’ve just given birth and have a newborn baby, they understand how much work you have. Seek out their love and support.

3. Baby-free time

As horrible as this may sound to you right now, it’s really a natural need. When you’re suffering from postpartum depression, you may, a lot of the times, not respond to your baby’s cries. This will increase the intensity of the crying which can further dampen your mood. Try to take some time off from looking after your baby. Spend some time with your friends, family, and your partner, without your baby.

4. Bond

Having a secure emotional attachment with your baby is essential for a healthy relationship with your child. It is necessary to ensure that both you and your baby are securely attached to each other. This attachment is formed when you respond to a baby’s needs and your baby responds to your efforts, such as when your baby is crying, you pick it up and hug it, and in turn she may giggle or smoke or hug you back. Try to engage in certain activities with your baby that could help you bond.

5. Self-care

In all your efforts to take care of your baby, you often forget that you are a human being who needs taking care of as well. Pamper yourself and take care of yourself once in awhile. Delegate the housework your partner, or hire help if necessary. Exercise is also something you can think about taking up. Exercising releases certain hormones which help elevate your mood.

Remember that motherhood is a full time job which lasts your entire lifetime after you have a kid. So remember to look out for yourself and your kid and have healthy relations and bonds with each other, because that really makes life a whole lot better and filled with love.
