An ENT specialist or an otolaryngologist is a doctor who treats conditions of the ear, nose and throat. People go to them for problems ranging from sinus problems to ear tumors. For children, however, their pediatricians decide when they need to visit an ENT specialist.

The most common reason for a child to have to visit an ENT doctor is because of an ear infection. For most kids, this infection may subside by itself with the help of antibiotics in a couple days. However, it is advised to get an ENT checkup for these infections because the infectious fluids may still be present in the ear, and this may cause problems in the future. Although very rare, these problems may even lead to your child going deaf.

Given below is a list of problems/conditions that an ENT specialist can help relieve based on problems that are common and unlikely.

Common problem that your child may have:
  • Nerve problems in your ears, nose, or throat
  • Dizziness
  • Sore throat
  • Hearing impairment
  • Ear infection
  • Tonsil or adenoid infection
  • Pain in your ears, nose, or throat
  • Ear, nose or throat birth defects

The main thing to remember is that never undermine your kid’s illnesses. Always get a doctor’s opinion whenever your child complains about feeling uneasy or in pain. A small illness may be a symptom of a bigger one.
