A parent-child bond is something that’s irreplaceable. For some, it happens when you see the first sonogram picture of your child. For others, this happens when they hold their baby for the very first time. However, there are a few cases where it takes a while to establish this special bond, and this is perfectly normal. In fact, at least 20% of new parents don’t form this bond immediately. Nevertheless, this bond can be created in different ways, which we shall explore in this article. Let’s begin.
1. It’s all about skin-skin contact
Touch is the best way to develop a bond with your baby. Take your baby in your arms whenever you can or hold your baby’s hands when you play with him/her. Hug your babies, keeping them close to your chest. The warmth from such skin-skin contact helps facilitate a bond.
2. Get to know your baby
The only way to do this is to give your baby as much attention as you can. Make sure you always keep an eye on them when you can and pay close attention to their facial expressions. Spend as much time as you can with him/her. This way, you will know your child’s every move and pick up cues to when he/she is hungry, sleepy or uncomfortable.
3. Talk, talk and talk
This is something all parents must do to bond with their baby. Talk! The power of sound is extremely strong. Babies can even develop a bond with their parents while in the womb just by hearing the voices of their parents. So, talk to your baby, even is what you’re saying does not make sense. Reading them a book, as even if they won’t understand the language, your voice is enough to comfort them.
4. Sing to your baby
Not a lot of parents do this, but singing to your baby helps comfort them. So, sing some nursery rhymes or even your favorite song if you wish. The choice of the song doesn’t really matter and believe it or not, neither does your voice. You could be the worst bathroom singer, but your baby will love it.
5. Build a special routine
Make a special, unique way of comforting them. Rock their cradle a certain way or sway them a certain way. They will recognize this routine and know it’s you. Make up words for eating or sleeping, as your baby will start recognizing these words and understand what you’re saying.
6. Massage your baby
It is shown that learning to massage your baby goes a long way in bonding with them and it even reduces premature stress in babies. Babies love massages and this is a great way to develop a bond with them. Interact with him/her in a way that involves skin-skin contact.
7. Keep them close
Always stay close to them and keep their cradle next to your bed. You can even have your child sleep next to you on your bed. If she’s playing on a mat, make sure you’re there next to her. The close proximity of a parent enables the baby to feel safe and secure.
If these tips don’t help and you still don’t feel that emotional attachment with your baby, contact your gynecologist and tell him/her how you feel. They will be able to tell you if it’s a psychological issue or a medical issue and will direct you to the help you need.
