In today’s day and age, it has become more important to be environment-friendly. Moreover, it is nice to be good citizens of the world and look after our planet. And the best part is that when you teach kids about being environment-friendly… they learn a lot more.
So here are 7 ways that you can teach your child to be good to the environment
1. Plant a tree or do some gardening together
This is a fun family activity and a perfect way to spend your weekends together. Planting trees and gardening help teach your children the cycle of nature and its importance. Learning the names of plants and insects will also inculcate an interest in the environment.
2. Skip the car
Dropping your kids off at their friend’s house that is walking distance? Tell them to walk it up, or better yet, cycle their way there. This not only saves the environment from a lot of pollution but also makes your child fitter and gives her/him a good sense of direction, making them independent.
3. Spend time outdoors
The more time children spend outdoors, the more they will appreciate the world and want to protect it. Making your kids spend time outdoors will also give them their daily dose of vitamin D and some exercise. It will set them on a healthier lifestyle while also ensuring they respect the environment around them.
4. Tell them why it’s important
To really get kids interested in an eco-friendly lifestyle, you have to teach them why it’s so important in a way they can understand. Relate things to their immediate environment and also show them news about the environment on the news. Talk to them about being environment-friendly every chance you get.
5. Start recycling
Recycling is the best way to give back to the environment on a small scale. Teach them how to upscale plastic boxes and reuse things around the house. Make sure you set an example for this and your child is bound to follow suit.
6. Set a proper example
Kids follow the examples they see. Whether the examples are good or bad, especially small children tend to copy behavior. So, keeping that in mind, as the best way to instill environment-friendly behavior is by being environment-friendly yourself. If you see the tap running while your kids are brushing their teeth, turn the tap off and teach them the importance of conserving water. But make sure you also do the same.
7. Don’t restrict your teachings
Don’t limit the ‘green’ attitude only to your household. Teach your kids to love the environment no matter where you go. If you are out in the park or at the mall, teach your kids things like not to litter and to dispose of any garbage in the right place.
