Anaemia during pregnancy is quite normal. It is caused when there is a lack of red blood cells. A woman’s body has a certain number of red blood cell count that fluctuates when she gets pregnant. The moment the red blood cell count falls beyond a safe level, there is a high chance of anaemia. When there is a drop in blood cells, the transfer of oxygen through healthy red blood cells from the lungs to the body tissue reduces drastically.

A few evident symptoms of an anaemic pregnant body are:

1. Dizziness

2. Headaches

3. Difficulty in breathing

4. Irregular heartbeat

5. Pale skin

6. Chest pain

Most pregnant women refrain from using heavy medications during their course of expecting a child. These are a few ways to curb the anaemia or reduce it. The easiest way to get rid of anaemia is by changing your food diet to a more healthier nutritious intake.

1. Vitamin C

Food that is rich in vitamin C helps keep anaemia at bay. It tends to protect your body from anaemia even after you deliver your baby. This will reduce the chances of persistent or recurrent anaemia after birth.

2. Iron diet 

Foods rich in iron are known to increase blood count level. Most of the foods that have a high iron content are green leafy vegetables. Preventing anaemia also looks after your baby’s health. Nuts, seeds, lentils, beans, eggs, poultry, red meat and dark green leafy vegetables are the best solution to keep anaemia at bay.

3. Dairy products

While you are on a diet that is high in iron, it is best to reduce the intake of dairy products. The heavy iron content can mix badly with that of the dairy products. Refrain from tea and coffee as they act as the same supplement of dairy products.
