Anaemia during pregnancy is quite normal. It is caused when there is a lack of red blood cells. A woman’s body has a certain count of red blood cells and this count fluctuates when she is pregnant. The moment the red blood cell count falls beyond a safe level, there is a high chance of anaemia. When there is a drop in count of blood cells, the transfer of oxygen through healthy red blood cells from the lungs to the body tissue reduces drastically.
A few evident symptoms of anaemia during pregnancy are:
- Difficulty in breathing
- Irregular heartbeat
- Pale skin
- Chest pain
Most pregnant women refrain from using heavy medication during their course of expecting a child. However, there are a few ways to curb anaemia or reduce it. The easiest way to get rid of the condition is by changing your diet.
1. Vitamin C
Food that is rich in vitamin C helps keep anaemia at bay. It tends to protect your body from anaemia even after you deliver your baby. Vitamin C will reduce the chances of persistent or recurrent anaemia after birth.
2. Iron diet
Food rich in iron is known to increase blood count levels. Most foods that have a high iron content are green leafy vegetables. Preventing anaemia is also a good way of ensuring your baby’s good health. Nuts, seeds, lentils, beans, eggs, poultry, red meat and dark green leafy vegetables are the best solution to keep anaemia at bay.
3. Dairy products
When you are on a diet that is high in iron, it is best to reduce the intake of dairy products. The heavy iron content can mix badly with that of the dairy products. Refrain from drinking tea and coffee, as they tend to contain milk.
