The demands of growing a baby in your belly, carrying it for 9 months, and then having it come out of your vagina – all this is sure to take a huge toll on the mother’s body. Mothers all over are told that it might take them only six weeks to get back to ‘normal’, but a new study has shown that most women need much, much longer to recover.
Dr. Julie Wray, a researcher at Salford University in England, found out that the regular six-week recovery time is a “complete fantasy,” and that it can take a full year to recover from childbirth. She interviewed women at different stages of postpartum life in order to conclude.
She also found that apart from the physical recovery that’s required, mental recovery is also needed. Many women feel the pressure, from everyone else and themselves as well, to be back and kicking soon after childbirth. They said that it feels necessary to head back to work as early as six weeks.
Dr. Wray concluded that recovery – both physical and mental – should start at the hospital. In the past, women were advised to spend much more time in the maternity ward, learning how to breastfeed and take care of their baby. Now it seems that women are released as early as six hours after delivery! How do you propose moms recover?
“The research shows that more realistic and woman-friendly postnatal services are needed,” Wray concluded. “Women feel that it takes much longer than six weeks to recover and they should be supported beyond the current six to eight weeks after birth.”
