So you’ve finally taken the decision to become parents – congratulations! You’re probably fully prepared and ready to go! But, even your mental preparation seems to be failing to make any difference because your body has decided to stop co-operating with you. Are you in the exact same situation?
Well, before you run off to the doctor, here are a few things you should keep in mind. There are a host of reasons for why you aren’t able to conceive. Stress, hypo- or hyperthyroidism, weight gain or loss, PCOS – all of these can affect your sex drive. Smoking or drinking alcohol can also play a major rule in not being able to become a parent.
What else has been said to affect your partner’s fertility, although it may not be proved yet, is placing a laptop connected to the internet on your sensitive areas (i.e, your penis or vagina). Apparently Vitamin-D helps a lot in improving your fertility!
How long have you been trying to conceive?
Be patient – after all, patience really pays off. A healthy couple has a 25% chance of becoming parents, every month, without any complications. This means that it can take up to 4 months or more to actually get pregnant.
We recommend you consult your doctor if:
– You’re under 35 years of age, and haven’t become pregnant despite having sex without protection for one year or more.
– You are over 35 years of age and despite 6 months of unprotected sex, you can’t become pregnant.
– You feel like you or your partner might have a fertility problem.
– You or your partner are no longer interested in having sex
Possible reasons for not becoming pregnant:
The biggest enemy to our spirit – tension is a cause for many illnesses, right from cough and cold to probably even cancer. Having said that, tension can also affect your fertility. The stress and pressure to have a child at the right age often disturbs most women (when it really shouldn’t) and this often takes a huge toll on your health. It would definitely help to take a break and just spend some time not worrying about this.
Women who have Hypo- or Hyperthyroidism will have trouble in producing and controlling their reproductive hormone. The thyroid disorder can cause ups and downs in your menstrual cycle, and cause irregular periods and too much or too less bleeding during your periods. The reduction in the thyroid level is caused due to the reduced level of hormones estrogen and progesterone. This can lead to the formation of an ovarian cyst, which can turn out to be the biggest reason for you not becoming pregnant.
3. Your weight
Apart from all the cardiac, respiratory and arthritic issues that comes with being overweight, probably the most hurtful one would be not being able to conceive. But this isn’t limited to overweight women – even women who are extremely skinny, might face problems while trying to conceive. In skinny women, the hypothalamus malfunctions, due to which the ovary also does not function properly, causing amenorrhoea. In overweight women, these problems are caused due to the absence of estradiol.
These are a host of interrelated problems. Having Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS can seriously curb your efforts to get pregnant. The women who have PCOS have a higher amount of male hormone, so it causes your egg follicle to not be developed enough. Due to this, you may have to experience infertility.
